In the 126th session of the Ohio General Assembly, held 2005-2006, Representaives Combs, Allen, D Evans, Hardwood, Kearns, McGregor, Setzer, Taylor, and Williams introduced HB 303, which would have amended section 5.091 of the Ohio Revised Code to read as follows:

"The children's book Lentil is hereby adopted as the official children's book of the state. The author of Lentil, Robert McCloskey, born in Hamilton, Ohio, is hereby designated the official children's book...

Appreciate your answer. I was fascinated by your son's perduring interest in Lentil, which illustrates the lasting influence of good books--though, alas, I suspect the same holds true for less wholesome reading.

I had forgotten that McCloskey wrote Make Way for Ducklings, which was one of my childhood favorites.

As for the state, please choose the one that makes your answer most meaningful to you. In fact, I had not even intended to limit it to children's books and authors, though that is certainly apropos.

Who knows? After you have provided your nomination, I may even be inspired enough to try one of my own. ;-)

Thanks again for your fine response.

Earl, I wasn't aware of Ohio's -- or any other state's -- proposal for an "official children's book." Good for Ohio! to choose Lentil (if they actually did so). I'm a bit surprised, though, that they chose it over McCloskey's Make Way for Ducklings or Blueberries for Sal, which seem to be better known, although not necessarily as regionally specific.

Lentil was one of my great favorites when I was a child. I read it out loud to both of my sons many, many times, but it was mainly my older son who couldn't get enough of it. He's now twenty-three, and just the other day he mentioned Lentil, fondly and with a touch of nostalgia. I'm betting that one day he will read it to his own child or children.

Hmm, I will have to think about which children's book or author that I would nominate for my state. Should that be the state where I grew up or where I now reside?

    State-Honored Books and Authors

Were you aware that a bill was introduced in the 2005-2006 session of the Ohio General Assembly to designate Lentil as the state's "official children's book" and its author, Robert McCloskey, who was born in Hamilton, OH, as the state's "official children's book author"? (Referred to committee, it is unclear that any further action was taken.)

Do you have any books or authors on your bookshelves designated or even nominated for such honors? If you were to nominate a book or an author for such recognition by your state, what or whom would it be?
