The Devil's Arithmetic is about a young Jewish girl named Hannah who doesn't like celebrateing all the Jewish holidays with her family. On one particular celebration Hannah takes a sip of wine and goes to sleep on her aunts bed. When she wakes up, she is in 1942 Poland.

She doesn't know the people she is with, but they tell her that she is family and that she has had a fever that has killed her parents. She is very confused, but she goes with it. They are preparing a wedding for her cousin and it is to be held in the village. Just as they get ready and the wedding begins, Nazi soldiers come and take everyone in the village to a concentration camp. When they get there, they are met by a girl named Rivka. She had been there longer and shows Hannah ( who is called Cheya) how to avoid being killed.

As the story goes on, Hannah keeps the prisoners at the camp entertained by telling stories and Rivka begins to get sick.

One day while working in the field, Rivka is coughing terribly and the guards are going to take her to the "showers". Cheya takes the bonnet from Rivka's head while the guard turned away and went in her place.

The showers come on and the next thing Hannah knows she is back in her aunts apartment gasping for breath. The aunt turns out to be Rivka and the story ends with Hannah understanding the meaning of family and why the Jewish celebrations are so important.

This is a very good book I think that it could be a neat way to discover the Holocost with Middle school students.

This book Is a sad but exciting book about a girl named Hannah. She is daydreaming about going back in time to the Haulocost. she is the only person that knows of her future in the concentration camps. when Nazi soldiers come to take her family and her away, she can't convince everyone to run away from the people. This book is very good and informational.

The author manages to describe not only events but emotions at an age appropriate level. It is a hard topic, but it is written in a manner that not only explains history, but touches your soul. The simple fact that ethnic cleansing still happens in the world today means we need to remember and need to write more books like this one.

This book is an adventure in time travel back to the Holocaust. The beauty of this book is that the author portrays very realistics parts of this terrible time in history without the gruesomeness. Hannah changes throughout the book in an endeavor to learn about her past and the ancestors who defined it.

An amazing story the literally takes the main character back in time to see the pain and struggles her family had to endure in the death camps. Impossible to put down and even more impossible not to love.
