In fact, it's the first book of Black's series, which continues; Valiant, Ironside, but the conntecting threads are relatively few and each story stands on it's own.

This book is part of a series right? Could someone let me know the first book of the series, and if I should bother with it?

    -spoilers!- o:

Were Spike, Lutie, & Gristle good guys or bad guys?
I'm very confused about this book's plot..
I can't decide if they are solitary, or belong to the Seelie Court..
Or if they were trying to get Kaye killed, or really meant to save her..

I loved this book for it's gritty portrayal of what happens when the faeries mess around in people's lives. At times I found some of the characters annoying (Janet and Corny), but you don't have to like every character for a book to be good.
Loved this book, Prince Valiant and Ironside as well.

Is it necessary to read Valiant inbetween Tithe and Ironside? I read Tithe when it first came out but passed on Valiant because it was not about Kaye and Roiben.

I'm not a fan of cursing, however, i felt that the way it was used in this book shaped the characters personalities as well as setting the setting of New Jersey (and many other areas) today. I can't say I loved the book, but I won't put it on the list of books i hate.

I don't really know what to say about this books, because I stopped reading it 3/4 of the way through. I'm actually amazed that I made it through that much! The language was disgusting, the actual writing wasn't anything to rave about, and the storyline just never drew me in. The story could have been good, but it just never happened for me! And I can totally understand why people said that this book isnt YA, it was gross, and it isnt YA. And also the_stuffy, Harry Potter, IS YA, I'm pretty sure it only swears twice (in the whole series, not just the first page, like in tithe) there is no drug reference, the only alchoholic drink in it is 'firewiskey' and the farthest anyone gets is fkissing! Yes there is an evil wizard that kills people and Harry has to stop him, but that doesn't make it not YA. Though I do agree with the CoB and CoA, its sick, how they're in love with each other and are siblings, if they actually are, which I think they might end up not being....but anyway, I just did not like Tithe.

Okay first of all I dont get why a lot of people are saying these books arent YA. There are books that are way "worse" as far as stuff like this goes. In Valiant its sex, drugs and rock and roll, in Speak theres rape, in Go Ask Alice theres sex, rape, drug abuse, In Harry Potter the kid basically loses his childhood to fighting an evil wizard for his life while everyone he loves gets killed by him, In CoB and CoA Clary is in love with a guy who so far is nothing but her friggin brother for petes sake, and theres lots more books with lots more "worse" things

I really didn't see what Valiant had to do much with Kaye and Roiben. It's good because of the little things, like the shots of faerie meds and how it affected them... But other than a few more things, I saw nothing... Anyone else?

All is not well in the land of Faery. Holly Black's novel, "Tithe", holds true to the basic concepts we know about fairies: some of them are up to no good, humans are their play things and iron makes them deathly ill. The Faery Courts are grand spectacles. Kaye, a teenager more the parent then the daughter often having to assist her drunken mother, has known faeries her whole life but really just thought she was "weird" that way....Started off slow but got better, enough so that I'll consider finishing the series one day. After reading several YA books for a group tag read, I was surprised that this author used profanity. A creative writer can portray teenage angst without the use of it even if she's trying to be realistic. The use of it actually detracted from the story. Not being prudish, it just didn't add anything discernible to these characters. It was a quick, easy read so I imagine kids very young reading it and parents, given the description of the story on the back and it being YA, may not expect this kind of language in it. Just putting that out there for you parents!”
