He suggests that peace can be achieved in the region when Israel starts honoring UN resolutions 242 and others. If only Israel left the occupied territories, all would be well. But Carter fails...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“"There can be no peace until both sides reach a consensus" Palestine Peace not Apartheid, a 250 page political book written by former president Jimmy Carter, demonstrates a correct assessment about how peace efforts between the Palestinians and Isrealis has been stalled. Step by step, peace deal by peace deal, Carter highlights them all and describes why they haven't worked. He includes the contributions of significant political figures such as Yassir Arafat, Mahmoud Abbas, Ehud Olmert, and George W. Bush. This book demonstrates how hard it is for peace to be achieved when Palestinians are living in a system of Israeli apartheid and have nothing to negotiate with. Carter should be congratulated for having the bravery to write this courageous and righteous book.”

Former President Carter writes about his dealings with Palestine, Israel and Egypt before, during and after his presidencies. He has always believed that peace in the region is necessary and has given his opinion to Presidents that have came after him. He is deeply respected by members of the Israel and Palestine Governments, and have been asked to oversee elections several times to make sure things are fair.”
“This book is especially topical and offers a great history of the events that have lead up to the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. I think it provides a different perspective of the conflict that what we usually are presented with in the U.S.”

Carter shares a lot of information about Israeli actions/decisions that the American government doesn't generally make overly clear to it's citizens through their unflagging support. However, this book did seem to wander a bit and bounce around in time, which made it somewhat confusing. Additionally, there was some background information that I think would have made the whole conflict a little more clear (for example, why did Britain set up the state of Israel after WWI to begin with?).
Like Carter's other books that I've read, this one made me think that Carter is a brilliant man, but a pretty terrible author. ”
“I found this a very interesting, helpful book on the crises in the Middle East. One of the peace negotiators on the Israeli side said that Jimmy Carter has been very helpful because of his naivete. Reading this book is a reminder that naivete and passion can be used by those in power to try and help -- and that innocence may be a big help to that effort. I thought it gave a window into the conflict and a window into the man that were very helpful.”
