Twilight

by Stephenie Meyer

"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. 'Be very still,' he whispered, as if I wasn't already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat."
As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite... (read more)

This is one of my absolute favorite books that I have read in such a long time. I read it in one weekend, it's the kind of book that takes hold of you and you just can't put it down. I've fallen in love with the saga of a girl who falls in love with a vampire. It has such a balance of love and suspence. I'm one chapter way from finishing New Moon the second book in the saga and can't wait to read Eclipse. Stephenie Meyer is such a talented author with a distinct voice that I'm so happy she...

Fluff....that's what this book is. Corny fluff. This book was CLEARLY written for young adult girls who fantasize about their knight, or in this case, their vampire, in shining armor. Blach..... So many things irritated me about it including how on earth could an OLD vampire fall in love with a goofy teenager. Give me a break!!!!! And, I thought the author was beating a dead horse with the constant talk from Edward about not wanting to put his human girl in danger and the girl's...

i believe one of the reasons this series is so popular is because the author illustrates the characters so well. they are rounded and real, not just black and white - this one is evil, this one is good. bella has negative points as well as positive ones. her obsession with edward is just not healthy and her aversion to marriage despite her insistence that she wants to spend eternity with edward is so irrational i laughed at the silliness. yet she is brave and fiercely loyal. jake, who started out almost too good to be true (the sweet, caring, loyal friend) became volatile and aggressive as he went through his transformations. one minute he's hurting bella, the next he's apologizing and swearing that he loves her more than anything. i like that these characters are so three-dimensional. it's what makes the readers really care about them and what will happen to them. the reader really feels like he/she is immersed in the story and a part of these characters' lives.

Well said, miraye! I feel the same way. I think that's the best compliment you can give a book or an author. When you can see the picture they've created and feel what the characters feel, you've accomplished total immersion into the story. It takes the reading exercise from just being an outsider reading a book to -being- there and experiencing it on a personal level .

I think that the way in which Twilight is comparable to Harry Potter, Narnia or whatever else is that Meyer has created a world that draws people in. When I read Harry Potter I felt like I was actually at Hogwarts with the students..and when I read Twilight I felt like I was right there with the vampires. So regardless of literary talent, plot or character quality, they have that magic in common.

(PS - I didn't mean to post this as a reply to a sharp's post specifically, sorry for the double post!)
