Elegant and evocative essays that make you think again about walking in the West, and how this seemingly ordinary act reflects our society and culture.

I love walking, and I love the spirit of walking this book celebrates.

The topic of the book is really interesting and it is obvious a lot of research and thought went into writing it. However, there have been times where the book literally put me to sleep.

A good book, and very informative. Not a book that I would usually read, but it presents you with a wide variety of interesting topics in a very well informed and thoroughly researched way. An excellently written book worthy of study for anyone interested in a walking history.

Rebecca Solnit, a thoughtful writer and spirited walker, takes her readers on a leisurely journey through the prehistory, history, and natural history of bipedal motion. Walking, she observes, affords its practitioners an immediate reward--the ability to observe the world at a relaxed gait, one that allows us to take in sights, sounds, and smells that we might otherwise pass by. Consider reading "Rings of Saturn" by W.G. Sebald if you like the sounds of this.

One of those books of essays you want to keep under-lining for all the great quotations, stories, thoughts.
