A quote from this book pushed me from being an agnostic to an atheist. It was this."There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on the entire earth" In this light how absurdly vain is it to think the earth is someplace special in a gods eye. It is special because we evolved...

    A science book for laymen.
The best-selling science book ever published in the English language, COSMOS is a magnificent overview of the past, present, and future of science. Brilliant and provocative, it traces today's knowledge and scientific methods to their historical roots, blending science and philosophy in a wholly energetic and irresistible way.

    Hi,
If U like mysteries there is nothing in the world so fascinating as the Universe.
Physics; the subject is much maligned...if one is not in awe or does not Wonder one is next to being vegetable(no offence toward vegs).
The way Carl Sagan explains the Universe is like reading the the Best Seller without a breakfast, lunch or dinner required...
    Happy Discoveries...sujata

    I miss Carl :(
I read this book when I was young & it really opened my eyes to how we're all just specks of dust compared to the universe as a whole.

Excellent book for anyone interested it cosmetology. Numerous previously confusing theories and facts now thoroughly explained. If I had to choose my favorite quality of this book it would have to be the method that Carl Sagan uses in order to explain space. He starts out with very basic information with things to consider, then in a cumulative style, he begins to explain the more complex aspects of our current universe and where we stand in relation to it. Other things that other readers will find interesting about this book would be all of the mind bending facts therein. For example. Did you know that the average supernova (a dying star) explodes with the equivalent force of ten-octillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) two-megaton nuclear explosions? Note that the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan only exploded with the force of one-tenth of a megaton. Therefore it would take one-thousand octillion Hiroshima bombs to equal the explosion of one supernova. It should come to no wonder that when the scientists say the Earth will be decimated when the sun blows up (becomes a supernova). That is just one of many nearly unfathomable facts inside COSMOS.

In addition to explaining key events of our universe, the book "Cosmos" also allows readers to develop their own theories as to how our universe may operate.
A must read for any modern literary aficionado.

One of best book I have read so far. Carl Sagan presents interesting detail of our universe and our place in it in Cosmos. Told in captivating style, the book answers many questions that I had since childhood about universe. Carl also describes briefly the danger of technological adolescent of our race for our own survival and suggest that reasoning, questioning authority, undesrtanding our evolutionary history can enable us to free ourselves from impending dange. A must read.

Watch the documentary of the same name, then read this. The documentary is required viewing for all humans. This book is only just below that level of recomendation. I'd recomend "Origins" for beginners to this subject (the subject being - All That is, Ever Was, and Ever Will Be) then move on to this one.
