• Ella Lela: The heroine of the book. Ella is given a "gift" by a fairy at birth. The gift is to always be obedient - and it gives her a terrible obeying life. Would she be able to lift the curse?
• Prince Charmont (Char): The prince of Kyrria and Ella's friend. He is funny, kind, and enjoys good conversation - but sometimes he gets too serious. Meets Ella in Lady Eleanor's funeral.
• Lady Hattie: Ella's acquaintance, Olive's sister and Dame Olga's daughter. She is conniving and controlling, and she figures out that Ella has to obey everything she says. Using this power, she gives Ella terrible commands to follow.
• Olive: Ella's acquaintance, Hattie's little sister and Dame Olga's other daughter. Olive is brainless and has an annoying and insatiable appetite for money, food and attention.
• Mandy: Ella's fairy cook and one of the few people to love and care for Ella after Ella's mother dies. The woman that Ella can sometimes trick into not making Ella do exactly what she wants. She helps Ella at her hardest times.
• Dame Olga: The irritating, selfish sickeningly coy mother of Hattie and Olive who only cares about wealth and money.
• Sir Peter of Frell: Ella's father, a deceitful trader who doesn't care about anyone, including Ella. . . unless they can make him money. He is ruined after selling a property that wasn't his.
• Areida: Ella's close friend from finishing school. She is Ayorthian and her family owns an inn. She has two brothers and one sister according to Fairest. Meets the prince and tries to justify Ella's sudden behaviors.
• Lady Lucinda: A foolish fairy who loves giving people horrible "gifts" on special locations. She is the reason Ella is under the curse, which was a "gift" Lucinda gave Ella at birth (her gift was obedience).
• Lady Eleanor: Ella's mother. She was fun and a free spirit. . . but Ella has a hard time after her death.
• King Jerrold: Char's father, the King of Kyrria.
• Sir Stephen: A talkative man, he took Ella to the giants' wedding where she is hoping to find Lucinda. He loves his hounds and is a toiling knight, and thinks highly of Char.
• Apple the Centaur: The young Centaur that Char captured for Ella.
• Bertha: The head maid in Ella's family home
• Nathan: A manservant.
• Pamela: Ella's childhood friend and a daughter of one of the servants. Ella punched her nose after Pamela found out about Ella's curse and tried to boss her around.
• Simon: The parrot keeper at the royal menagerie. He presents Ella with a parrot as a gift.
• Madame Edith: The headmistress of the finishing school.
• Slannen: The elves' chief trader. He is nice to Ella and presents her with an Agulen sculpture.
• Cyril: A gentleman fairy.
• Claudia: A fairy who works as the cook for Ella's family. One of the only people who know about Ella's obedience
