Didn’t Like It2 of 2 members found this review helpful“On my "I've Read" shelf, but should be "I tried to read". This book seemed like it could be provocative and interesting- but frankly, I thought it was boring. When I pick up a huge book I need to be pulled in and committed. By the time I hit page 300 I still didn't care about Sugar or the...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“This book was very readable, and I enjoyed the experience. However, there was something lacking--the characters were well-drawn, and the descriptions of the Victorian demi-monde were believeable, but the novel missed a certain amount of charm. For all that the characters were well depicted, the failed to illicit any emotion from me, and I didn't really care about their future. Thus the abrupt ending wasn't as disappointing to me as it seems to be to others. ”

The detail of each character and their surroundings (London during the Victorian era) is so intricate and colorful, I could swear that the author had been alive during that time period. Starting from the beginning, the reader is immediately placed into the many characters' lives as a voyeur...until you are wrapped up into each character and their problems that you begin to feel something for them, how foolish I felt at times.
Then to my dissatisfaction, the ending was so abrupt and empty that I wasn't prepared. Surely, the author could've made the grand finale alittle more cohesive and fulfilling? I wasn't wishing for the "happily ever after" scenario, I mean c'mon Sugar was a prostitute afterall..so the expectation of marriage and "Lady" status wasn't there. So at least end the saga on a positive note with alittle hope as to what becomes of Miss Sugar and Miss Sophie. ”
“I really liked this book, set in 19th century London. The author has done a great job of making the characters seem real and has woven the story of prostitutes and the well-to-do into a tale that is sometimes shocking and sometimes humorous. This book is easy to read and flows well. The ending took me by surprise, which is always a good quality in a novel. ”

The only reason I didn't mark this as "I loved it" is that some of the magical realism gets a little tiresome and the book is heart-breaking. ”
