Hecka cool! Way better than the movie, for sure lol. Everything melded together so perfectly and worked out into the only possible ending. Characters developed, adventure was had, and I'm pretty surprised that I've come to even like Melynglas. =)
Lloyd Alexander is a master storyteller. The story is well planned, and you really get that assuring feeling as you read. There's not one detail that meanders or is irrelevant.

This is truly one of the most delightful books in the Prydain Chronicles and it's easy to understand how this managed to get a Newbery Honor as well as movie rights. The tale of Taran takes a darker turn with a story that is violent, exciting, and tragic. Elements such as the Fates are brought in, but what truly makes this plot work so well is how redemption is handled. Even so, it's a funny, exciting, and truly marvelous book.

From the back cover: In the imaginary land of Prydain, where "evil is never distant",it has become imperative that the Black Cauldron, chief implement of the diabolical Arawn. be destroyed. In this cauldron has created his terrible army of deathless warriors from the stolen bodies of the slain. For each of those chosen to journey to Arawn's domain, the quest is has a special meaning and to Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper, the adventure becomes a glorius opportunitie to wear his first sword and prove himself a man among men.

goes on the list with le guin's earthsea trilogy, l'engle's time series, tolkien and c.s. lewis as fantasy classics for younger readers. although i can read any of these now, i just love the absence of cynicism. this i good stuff.

I liked this book for the simplicity. A good read-aloud for children or young adults.
