Taran longs for a life bigger than the confines of Caer Dallben. But when adventure falls into his lap, he quickly discovers that good and evil are far beyond what he imagines them to be. With princes and undead warrior-kings, bards and wizards and an oracular pig, Taran is never at a want for strange companions or dangerous enemies. They journey across Prydain while the Horned King pursues.

The story is whimsical while not being absurd, with simple humor that children will appreciate. From Gurgi's rhyming speech to Eilonwy's endless chatter, the story begs to be read aloud so each line can be better appreciated. Even for the length it's a fast read, as there is not much description or tedious sections of plot that bogs things down. The snippets of various myths and stories woven through the main story give further glimpses into the world of Prydian.

Yet for all the charm and simplicity, I found myself unable to really care about the story. The characters are all exceedingly straightforward except for Gwydion, who is not even present for a good portion of the book, and by the end it felt like divine intervention that ended the Horned King.

Overall it's not a bad story at all, though I think younger readers will appreciate it more. The simplicity of plot and character do not leave me with much of a reason to come back to the book, though I will read the rest of the series. I rate this book Neutral.

Taran is forbidden to go into the forest. However, when the pig that he is supposed to be guarding escapes her pen, Taran takes chase which leads him into the forbidden forest. What evil awaits him there?

Taran grumbles with frustration at home in the hamlet Caer Dallben; he yearns to go into battle like his hero, Prince Gwydion. Before the story is over, he has met his hero and fought the evil leader who threatens the peace of Prydain: the Horned King.

I adored this series as a young adult, and found the images it conjured to be very powerful. I am glad that these books are still around and available to the next generation.

I like this book so far. They have funny names. And Eilonwy (I think that's how you spell it) is cool.
