Didn’t Like It“Really only finished it because my friend, Jo, enjoyed it so much. Wasn't awful, just couldn't get into it enough to care about it one way or the other. The repetition was a big turn-off. What's with that?” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I love Carol Shields' insights and writing style. I find her unexpected details and way with words to be captivating (and often very funny.) Like this simple sentence: “She had a gift for disappointment.” How perfect...don't we all know at least one person that describes?”

It tells the story of Larry Weller, a normal American guy. The story is told via several vignettes, and while I found it to be interesting, each vignette behaved as if you were just starting the book, stating several facts over again. The book starts off with Larry as a young man and finishes when he is in his late 40's. Overall, a good read.”

I caught myself several times reading this book with a big smile on my face. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of in this novel was how she structured each chapter with a review of previous chapters. It was like she intended to make each chapter function as a short story apart from the whole. Became too redundant for me.”

I liked "Unless" so much I guess I assumed it was the author not the book. This was okay--mostly I just finished it to see how it ended. It ended quite well, but didn't change my life.”
