15 B.C. The most interesting character in the novel is a female gladiatrix who was so good she was allowed to "retire," i.e., given her freedom. She is hired as a bodyguard by a businessman who has put himself in some dangerous situations. Inevitably, they fall in love. Once she becomes a "concubine" instead of a gladiator her life starts to fall apart, although the book pretends to have a happily ever after ending. The history of the historical novel is more interesting than the novel.
