Palimpsest: A Memoir

by Gore Vidal

A candid memoir of Vidal's first 40 years of life. His famous skills as a raconteur, his forthrightness, and his wicked wit are brilliantly at work in these recollections of a difficult family, talented friends, and interesting enemies. (read review)

A marvelous memoir. Vidal is as gossipy and acidic as his fans could hope for, but there are frequent moments of poignancy as well. Few authors come as well connected as Mr. Vidal, and there's no doubt that he was the ultimate insider, gliding observantly between the halls of power in Washington to the Greenwich Village bohemia of the post-war era to the swimming pools of Beverly Hills. It all makes for riveting reading, a sort of modern day "Vanity Fair."

I didn't much care for it. I like other books of GV's but his autobiography is very dry. Too much philosophy.
