“Great story in the Midnight Breed series.”Avid Reader N AZ wrote this review Saturday, March 9, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“Another good installment of the Midnight Breed series. This book centers around Kade, a fairly new member of the Order, and Alex, an independent but haunted female pilot living in a remote town in Alaska. There is good character development for both of these characters, and although I never really felt completely invested in their fates, I liked them both. I could go into the details of their stories, but they both follow the "formula" so there really weren't any surprises.
The parallel plot with Dragos and the Ancient was a large part of the story but yet, still only touched upon. There were no personal details of Dragos to keep us in touch with his dasterdly deeds ;-), but we do get a better look into the Ancient's mind. I said "better look", but still not enough to know what makes this creature tick. And I hope that the way the his story was left means that we haven't seen the last of him.
The ending, though not a true cliffhanger, leaves it wide open for where this series could go from here, and I'm truly looking forward to seeing where Adrian takes us with Jenna and her involvement. (Jenna is Alex's best friend, a former law enforcement agent, but not a Breedmate as far as we can tell right now.)
Adrian has definitely gotten away from the "romantica" style that started this series, but the story line itself is much stronger and interesting. Definitely a series worth exploring, and while this 7th book is not the strongest, it is a good addition worth reading if you're a fan of the Midnight Breed Series.”
“Shades of Midnight was good. I adored Alex and thought she was tender, and tough taking charge of her life. Kade was a sympathetic Breed knowing what he wanted and feeling the turmoil of his father's rejection and his brother's betrayal. I did grow a little weary toward the end with his "I don't deserve you, and am setting your free" plot. Otherwise, worth the read.”Lisa D wrote this review Friday, June 22, 2012. “Shades of Midnight, book 7 in The Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian
Alexandra (Alex) Maguire, a sexy bush pilot in Harmony Alaska, has been running all her life. A child witness to the supernatural attack that took her mother and brother down in Florida, she's never quite shaken the feeling that there's something out there still after her. When she comes across a grizzly set of murders in Alaska while out flying supplies, and then finds an inhuman footprint in blood and snow next to one of the bodies, the past she's never quite outrun comes rushing back. But how can she tell her adopted town about the monster that she knows is stalking it?
When Kade, a stranger with something not quite normal about him, shows up looking for information. Alex many just have to take a chance and put her future in the hands of a man she doesn't know, but who touches parts of her she never thought would thaw again.
Another solid entry in the series, Shades of Midnight picks up directly after the events of the last book. There you'll remember we learned that the Ancient, a being from another planet and one of the original 8 that created the Breed, had escaped the clutches of the evil Dragos, who was using the beast to create a new generation of powerful Gen Ones, that he was subsequently training to be his own personal assassin slaves.
This time around we have the Breed Warriors sending Kade to investigate the source of a video that's been posted to the net. The video shows a killing ground that the Warriors immediately realize could only belong to one of their own kind. Being from Alaska originally, Kade has some unfinished business he needs to take care of anyway and takes the assignment.
Alex is a strong female lead who I liked immediately. Kade on the other hand fell a little flat for me. I didn't really develop a connection with him early in the book and though we saw and learned much more about him as the book progressed, I never got over my initial impression.
The couples relationship is nice. They each have strengths and weaknesses that merged together nicely. And they just make a nice couple. The smut was a little lack luster, but the requisite bits were all present and accounted for.
In the end though, something about all the story elements never jelled for me: the evil twin, Kade's other family issues, his practically tripping over another of Dragos' facilities, the drug dealer line.... even my impressive suspension of disbelief felt like it had been through a hot yoga class taught by an evil Shaolin monk.
For us fans of the series though, there's certainly enough action and romance to keep us coming back for more. Book 7 also points quite clearly to the couple that we are going to explore in book 8, and things are looking interesting. So I'll see you next time.”
“I love this series, but I must say this book was a little slow for me. It didn't pick up pace till almost 1/2 way thru, then it was full steam ahead. Now, on to the next one in this series...”Silverlight wrote this review Monday, November 21, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“This is Alex and Kade's story. Alex flies a plane with supplies throughout Alaska. Kade is a Breed Warrior who is sent back to his Alaska home to help desern if some killing were the act of rougues (vampires who have went into blood lust). Kade left Alaska to join the order (a group of vampires who fight and kill members of the vampire race who have went into blood lust) just over a year ago becasue his brother went Rougue and he could no longer stand to be in Alaska.
Alex is a Breedmate (human women who can carry the vampires children) who has seen this type of attack before and was trying to decide if she should run again or not. Kade promises to keep her safe.
I love this series becasue all of the women are strong and do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones and the rest of the Breed. This is one of my favorite vampire books ever. Suggest you check it out!!!!!
“This series is amazing and Kade has just been added to my list of favorite vampires. He is sexy, sensitive and honorable, and his chemistry with Alex is some of the most intense in the series. The way in which their relationship builds in simply perfect.
