space opera. cool strong lead character. likable, well conceived secondary characters with depth. cool concepts = alien life forms, politics, etc. a decent entertaining read, but overall about a B, if i was grading. it's missing something, and I'm often frustrated with Charijo, the main...

Liked it, not bad. The whole Reever issue was a little irksome.

I've always wanted to read a woman doctor book, and here I have it in abundance. Traumacenter in a frotier world, a woman possibly three years out of her residency program. I devoured the medicine greatly happy for it.

Of course I was largely uncomfortable with the weird diseases case in point the rather spoilerish big semi pandemic that took them in the end. I really liked the males in this book too.

And compared to other space opera, they don't let you jump in the middle of the story with leagues and leagues of past between two characters just finding thesmselves again, no it is all laid out in the beginning because... yes there's at least 8 more books of the stardoc series out there.

I am eagerly waiting to read the rest, but am biding my time for it.

I liked this book basically because of the great main character, a brilliant young woman doctor who must escape her speciest earth father's persecution by moving to another planet where she must practice her medicine on a huge variety of sentient beings. The mystery about the cause of an epidemic illness and it's solution was intriguing, and like many good science fiction and fantasy stories, raised a lot of human and ethical issues.

Although the story certainly has plemty of flaws, including a few characters and scenes that were too stereotypical, reminding me more of ones in very bad romances, the story was interesting overall. Through the doctor exploration of her mysterious past, and her dealings with various beings who each have their own cultures and ethics, the ultimate theme of this book is: "What does it take to be a human...or, in this case, a sentient being?"

space opera. cool strong lead character. likable, well conceived secondary characters with depth. cool concepts = alien life forms, politics, etc. a decent entertaining read, but overall about a B, if i was grading. it's missing something, and I'm often frustrated with Charijo, the main character. She gets key info that would help solve whatever her problem is, and then she forgets about it, in one case, she didn't explore her options or ask the right questions for two books. also would like to see a book where cherijo isn't kidnapped, held prisoner, enslaved or captured by the bad guys. i find myself spending a lot of the time i'm reading wishing she would just find a way out and get on with it. still, i've read something like 6 of these in a month or two, so i don't want to knock it too hard.

Doctor Cherijo leaves Eath to be a doctor on K-2, and adventures ensue. Fun SF with a great heroine. I read the whole series in one week.

Excellent story. I found it hard to put down after the first few pages.
