The Darkyn novels are good, but I just don't seem to be as hooked on this series as I am on the Dark-Hunters or Charlaine Harris. Good reads, but not keepers.
Darkyn are vampires, only different from how modern humans paint them. They each look for their mate, and emit certain scents that help to control humans for feeding.

I always like a good vampire book. This series is rather bland, and the "history" of the characters is slow to develop. I hope the series improves throughout the next couple of books.

In Chicago, Dr. Alexandra Keller is one of the best plastic surgeon. She is well known by her complex cases, that she treated accurate and fast.
In New Orleans Michael Cyprien offers Alexandra a huge amount of money to operate on his face,
the only demand he has is that she operate on him in his mansion in New Orleans.
Alexandra refuses and tell him to come to Chicago, because she has other patients. But it is impossible for Michael to come, so he send some of his men to kidnap her and bring her to his house.
When Alexandra awakes in Michael’s house, she is furious and demand to speak to him in person, so she can tell him what he can do with his money and power.
But the moment Alexandra meets Michael in person she is overwhelmed to discover the shape his face is in. During the examination she wonders who torture him so much that it doesn’t look like a face anymore. At that moment Michael explain why it is important that she does the operation. She is the surgeon who is the fastest with her scalpel and that is why he needs her. He demonstrates how fast his body heels, within a few seconds the wounds is whole again.

Despite his orders Michael and Alexandra are left alone after the operation.
Weakened by the blood loss during the operation, Michael does not know what he is doing and he bites Alexandra in her throat and infect her with his vampires blood.
Michael cannot believe what he has done, he send Alexandra to death, because no human survives the transformation…..but Alexandra proves otherwise….Soon as she discovers what and who Michael really is, she does everything to stop the virus from spreading and runs back to Chicago.
But how guilty Michael feels about it, he cannot let Alexandra go, because there is a group of Vaticans, called the Brethan, who hunts vampires, torture them and final kills them.
Can he save her before the Brethan gets to her ??

In Chicago, Alexandra loses bit by bit the fight against the vampires blood. She needs to inject herself regularly with human blood to survive and her new gift she develop is getting her as well.
And when Michael appears on her doorstep with the question to help him again, to do the same thing for his best friend and family as what she did for him, she decide to give in and let the attraction between them and his world take over.

This super vampire story is from the beginning full of action, from the moment that Alexandra is kidnapped, the tensions don’t slow down.
The story line contain tremendous characters, that you think the Darkyn are real men.
Alexandra’s brother John, who is a priest are in the middle of the war and has a difficulty to accept that his sister is a vampire now.
Lynn Viehl writes fabulous and treats the readers on a dose paranormal that we can value and I’m very curious about the second book.

I'm giving this a four because I really enjoyed the female lead. Not your typical vampire book. Really enjoyed it.

This is the first book of the Darkyn series. Dark, intense, chilling, somewhat gruesome. Be aware that some scenes can be disturbing, even offensive...and yes, a stronger stomach is required. I won't call this a "romance"; it feels more like a horror story with a romance in it. The writing is crisp, edgy and very readable. Fast paced. Anne Rice's influence is evident.
