There were three of them in a second class compartment of the Prague-České Budějovice express: Senior Lieutenant Lukáš, across from whom was sitting an older gentleman, totally bald, and Švejk, who was standing modestly by the door leading to the passageway and was just getting ready to hear the full measure of a new rolling wave of raging thunder of abuse by Senior Lieutenant Lukáš who, disregarding the presence of the baldheaded civilian, had been roaring along the whole length of the railroad line they have journeyed thus far to coax Švejk’s soul into reforming, telling him that he’s God’s filthy cattle and the like.
