Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy

by Frances Mayes

In this memoir of her buying, renovating, and living in an abandoned villa in Tuscany, Frances Mayes reveals the sensual pleasure she found living in rural Italy, and the generous spirit she brought with her. She revels in the sunlight and the color, the long view of her valley, the warm homey architecture, the languor of the slow paced days, the vigor of working her garden, and the intimacy of... I see I'm not the only one to have found this memoir excruciatingly dull. It's like reading a cook book.

Nice read, but I'd rather go to Tuscany than read about someone else there!

I think this author did a great job in bringing you into the world of Tuscany. It made me want to go there. Well, actually I've always wanted to go there ever since I read "A Room With a View," but this made me want to go even more.

Boring. It's like reading This Old House with Bob Vila in Italy. No romance just a rundown villa.

SUMMARY: The story of the purchase and renovation
of a villa in Cortona, making it into a home, and of her love of the house and the Tuscan culture and countryside.
COMMENTS: The Tuscan countryside, people, and
culture come alive through the author’s memories and words. I could almost feel the sun and taste the wine as I read. It brought back memories and
    anticipation of return.
