This work on the building of a marvel of human engineering is not a page-turner, but it made me want to get on a plane to Florence to see it for myself. It is a delightful and fascinating little book. It offers insight into life in the Middle Ages, as well as the story of Fillipo Brunelleschi and his innovative (and unequaled) design for the dome of the Cathedral of Sante Maria del Fiore in Florence.

This is a fascinating and very readable account of the history of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, and in particular, the building of the dome that is the crowning glory of the cathedral. Although some parts become a little technical in the descriptions of machinery and building processes, it is a fascinating insight into the people and politics of 14 century Florence. This book was recommended to me by the guide that we had when we visited the cathedral in Florence last year. After reading it I am even more fascinated, awestruck and overwhelmed by this amazing and beautiful building! The only problem is now I want to go back to Italy even MORE than ever!!!!

I decided to read this book before I headed to Florence. It was very technical and somewhat dense reading. I enjoyed the overall story of the Dome's construction and the technology and effort that went into it. However, I have to admit that the technical nature of the book had me bored at some points. After having visited the Dome, I am so glad that I first read the book. It made the experience so much more interesting!!

The best book on Renaissance genius ever written. Want to understand the mind of a master with rich historical context? There is none better than Ross King

An excellent non-fiction piece around the construction of the splendid dome in Florence - Santa Maria del Fiore. Particularly nice job of sharing the personal struggles which really brought the story to life...but of course, the details around the actual architectural design and tools to realize it were also well done!
