In The Dead Girls' Dance, the second book in the Morganville Vampire series, Claire, Shane and Eve are still reeling from Michael's death and are at the mercy of Shane's father, Frank and his biker friends. It's revealed that Shane returned to Morganville as a scout to gather information on potential vampire targets and hideouts for his father so that they could avenge the murders of Shane's mother and sister Alyssa. While Eve and Claire are alone, one of the bikers sneaks into their bedroom and tries to assault them. The girls are saved by Michael who has reappeared. Michael explains to the relieved and tearful duo that the house will always protect him because it owns his soul no matter what happens to his body. Michael calls the police and reports intruders in his home. At the sound of sirens, a furious Frank and his goons run away.
The police, made up of those who work for the vampires, Hans and Gretchen, and those who are human, question them extensively but they answer vaguely for Shane's sake and eventually the police leave. Michael asks Shane for an explanation. Shane tells them how the vampire's had given his family compensation after Alyssa’s death and allowed them to leave Morganville, minus their memories to start a new life. Shane's mother, however, started to remember things and eventually helped Shane to remember. The vampire's fearing exposure saw the return of her memory as a threat and murdered her by making it look like suicide. Shane helps Frank to remember Alyssa’s death and Frank swears to avenge his wife and daughter. Upon returning to Morganville, however, Shane became distracted with his friends and didn't contact his father like he was supposed to. The trio are appalled by Shane's story and sympathise. They agree to lay low until things quieten down.
The following day they are paid a visit by two policemen (who are neutral and keep the balance between the vamps & humans) named Joe Hess and Travis Lowe. They inform Eve that her younger brother Jason, (whom Eve shopped to the police when he murdered a girl) has been released from jail and fearing for Eve's safety offer to escort her and Claire to her new job at the university campus coffee shop. Claire learns that Brandon had been the Patron of Eve's family but had abused her. Her new Goth image was meant to deter Brandon but backfired when he turned his attention on Jason. Jason changed as a result of Brandon's influence.
While exploring Morganville's historical buildings, Claire stumbles across another house with the same vibes as Glass House. The old lady who lives there allows Claire to use the bathroom where she stumbles into Amelie's office instead. Amelie has been expecting her and Claire realises that Amelie has specifically designed the houses so she can transport between them. Clare spots Frank talking to Oliver in the Common Ground coffee shop and wonders what they're up to. As she spies on them, she meets a vampire named Sam who is the youngest vampire in the world as no vampire has been created for more than 70 years. He's curious about why Amelie has taken an interest in Claire and confides that Amelia refuses to see him and has done so for many years. Clare realises that Sam is in love with Amelie. Sam is alone as the other vampires treat him as an outcast and he doesn't belong with humans either.
Later that day, Eve and Claire are abducted by Hans and Gretchen and taken to a vampire council meeting headed by Amelie and Oliver. They are appalled by the sight of Brandon's mutilated body and learn that he was tortured to death. They are horrified to see Shane and one of the bikers in a cage as possible suspects. Shane explains that he tried to save Brandon from his father and Claire pleads with Amelie to intervene on Shane's behalf. Amelie, who had warned them not to disrupt the peace, withdraws her protection from Shane when they can find no proof of his innocence. Shane is to be kept in the cage for two days as an example and burned to death after that.
Clare visits with Amelie and appeals to her for help. Amelie tells Claire that she knows why Shane returned to Morganville and that his family had been given every chance to move on after Alyssa’s death. Despite knowing that Shane is innocent, Amelie refuses to counter Oliver's order and help Shane. She warns Claire, "Do not come back to me little Clare. I will not be so well-disposed to you again."
Having failed to convince Amelie, Claire persuades Hess to take her to see Oliver in an effort to bargain for Shane's life. A bitter Oliver refuses to listen until Claire offers to swear allegiance to him and not Amelie. Hess is shocked. A ruthless Oliver tells Claire that her contract would not be the usual one signed by others in Morganville, but would be from the old days whereby he would own her body and soul. Hess tries to leave with Clare and is forced to pull a gun (with silver melted from a cross) on Oliver when he refuses to let them go. Oliver warns Hess to watch his back and Hess and Clare leave. Hess warns Clare that she has annoyed both Amelia and Oliver in one night and must lie low as he intends to.
Clare and Eve are abducted by Monica who has a message from her father, the mayor. That Frank gives himself up in return for Shane's life. Before Monica can let Clare go, they in turn are abducted by Frank who takes Monica hostage as a bargaining chip for Shane's release. Clare is to deliver the message to the mayor. The mayor and his son, Richard questions her extensively.
Clare discovers that Sam is Michael's grandfather and Eve realises that Sam protected her against Brandon and Oliver while she worked at the Common Ground. Eve decides to enlist Sam's help in rescuing Shane. They learn that Sam has gone to a frat party called The Dead Girls Dance and go to see him. At the party Clare is almost drug raped (set up by Monica prior to her kidnapping) and saved by Sam and Eve.
Later that evening, Clare is shocked to find Amelie and Sam talking with Michael. Michael wants Amelie to turn him into a vampire as he's sick of being trapped at Glass House and helpless to help his friends. Amelie warns him that he risks losing his human qualities. Claire pleads with him to reconsider but Michael is adamant. Sam takes Claire upstairs while Amelie turns Michael. Eve comes running at his screams when it is all over. Michael apologises to Eve who promises, "For you Michael. I can deal."
Michael goes to see Oliver and the mayor and reaches an agreement whereby if Frank releases Monica then Shane goes free. With the help of Hess and Travis, they set out to rescue Monica. Claire inadvertently lets slip that she saw Frank and Oliver talking in the Common Ground and they realise that Oliver is working together with Frank to cause chaos for Amelie and he allowed Frank to kill Brandon as an act of good faith. Holding Shane hostage was Oliver's insurance against Frank.
They find Monica in a warehouse that’s been set on fire and Claire saves the lives of both Monica and Richard. The fire was a diversion as during Monica's rescue attempt, Frank has rescued Shane. In a standoff between Oliver and Frank, Claire is throttled by a ruthless Oliver so that Shane will surrender. Shane incapacitates Oliver by throwing holy water in his face and later thwarts Frank's plans to blow up the hospital. Frank and Shane part on bad terms. The police clear Shane of killing Brandon.
Shane is unable to come to terms with Michael becoming a vampire and is hostile towards him. Clare finds a note from Amelia warning her that her informal Protection is no longer sufficient for Claire and her friends as Oliver will seek vengeance. She urges Clare to sign a contract binding her to Amelia service throughout her lifetime. To protect her friends, Claire signs the contract without telling them.
