“This series is really hitting it's stride now, which means it's getting very complicated.
I love the concept of this series, the weather aspect is a unique slant to the paranormal genre, and for the most part Caine does it well, if at times it feels a little science class.
By the end of this book, everything Jo thought she knew about what is right and wrong is blown apart. her beloved weather wardens are corrupt, her friends are not what they seem, and she is used by just about eveyone as a pawn. With the revelation of the Ma'at, we are left wondering what Jo will do next, whether she wll manage to save David, and what will happen to their child.
I like the majority of things about this book. I like Jo, even though I imagine she could grate on some people. I love David. Full Stop. But there is just so much going on, that it makes my head ache. Jo has been through so much over a timespan of about three weeks. She's died twice at my count, been beated a number of times (surely we're in double figures now?) gotten pregnant, been a Djinn, been made human again, and been betrayed by practically everyone she knows.
I'm exhausted, literally, and I want to sit Rachel Caine down and say simplyfy! Or sort out some of your plot tangles. I really hope people like Lewis and Paul don't get let off the hook, and that we find out more about Jonathon, because at the moment I'm grabbing at straws to understand why he hates Jo so much, his relationship with david needs some serious development.

“Good read.”

Joanne is trying to stop Kevin and the uber-Djinn Jonathan who he now has under his control...or is it the other way around? To do this she has to die...again but it gets her where she needs to go - Las Vegas, where she faces up against a past horror and some new ones. Another action packed book in the series.”

Joanne is on her way to Vegas to stop Djinn wielding Kevin from destroying the balance in the weather, however before she can complete that task she is kidnapped by Ma'at who want to stop Kevin just as bad, just not for the same reasons. If that doesn't do it for you the Ma'at the unknown opposing force to the Wardens is led by one of the Wardens. Life doesn't seem to be getting any easier for Jo.”

Just as book 2 picked up where book 1 left off, this 3rd book picks up where book 2 left off, and Joanne has to deal with events from that book. She also learns about the nature of love, along with battling the forces of nature and driving fast cars. There are some shocking developments that I can't wait to see dealt with in book 4, which, fortunately, is waiting in my TBR pile.”

Mrs. Caine keeps Joanne's and David's relationship fraught with suspense and danger but their love anchors her books like bedrock. Like Butcher, the books are fast and enjoyable reads. Deep enough to keep you hooked without loosing it's sense of adventure. Rachel also takes huge chances tearing Joanne down but she never backs away from the consequences and growth that result and I respect the hell out of her writing for that.
I heartily rec the entire series.”
“This is the third novel in the series and is another excellent novel in the series. There's an incredible amount of things that happen in this novel. Joanne dies (again), comes alive (again), her relationship with David changes somewhat (due to extenuating circumstances), she finds she's pregnant, people are out to kill her, there's a group of people who oppose the wardens that she didn't even know about, and so on.
This has to be one of the wildest and best series that I have ever read in any genre. It's the type of book you want to read straight through without ever putting down, it's that good.”
“I just love this series of books - although fantasy is not my normal genre I love the characters they are written so well - like most women readers ( I would think ) I am, of course in love with David and as the series winds on get more and more worried for them both - beautifully written very amusing in places and the descriptions are very vivid - am waiting for the next book ”

Chill Factor is a tightly-wound, fast-paced and action-packed story, rich in detail and characterization, and an utterly absorbing read.
Though I agree it would be tough to follow this book without the benefit of reading the first two, for those who've made the journey thus far with Caine's multi-faceted cast of characters, the payoff in this latest installment is substantial -- thought-provoking, emotionally intense, and ultimately satisfying.
Joanne Baldwin is not a heroine whom I identify with in a lot of respects. But for the first time, in this book, I found myself truly warming to her, even to the point of laughing and yes, crying at some of the more riveting turns. Caine has added layers of depth and complexity to her, drawing the character's inherent honor and integrity much closer to the surface. And the secondary players continue to expand and evolve as well, both good and evil, from those we already know in some detail (David and Lewis) to others whose motivations have been more of a mystery (Jonathan, Marion Bearheart, Kevin Prentiss, et al).
In the author's skillful hands, the initial plot surrounding the rogue partnership of Kevin (uncontrolled Warden) and Jonathan (all-powerful Djinn) widens into a greater conflict -- one encompassing missing/kidnapped Djinn, the ethics of a Warden bureaucracy that may in fact be rotten to the core, and the imminent future of a planet whose natural forces remain dangerously unbalanced -- all against the glittering backdrop of Las Vegas and the raw, desolate beauty of the desert southwest.
Meanwhile, relationships stretch and tangle. The connection between Joanne and her Djinn lover, David, remains at center stage -- exhilarating, heartbreaking, and always compelling. New readers to the series would be better off beginning with the first two installments, the excellent Ill Wind and its follow-up, Heat Stroke. Chill Factor ends cleaner, and on a different note than the more dark and disturbing Heat Stroke...but with so many issues left out there to resolve, I'm thrilled at the thought of this series continuing on with thrills to come.”
