When Hell Freezes over is written by Darien Lee. The story is about Keaton, who is Arnelle’s little brother from the previous book, What Goes Around Comes Around. Keaton is something like a player. One of his favorite things to say is he’ll settle down with one woman, when hell freezes over, which is were the title of the book comes from.
At the beginning of the book he’s shown getting his freak on with this lady he meet while he’s visiting his sister and her husband. He’s come to visit them for a while because of problems with his blood pressure, and has decided to take a break from running his restaurant for a while.
One night one of the kids gets sick, and he rushes the baby (Fredrick) to the hospital. There he meets Meridan, who is a pediatrician. He previously meet her when Fredrick was born. Immediately he’s attracted two her and asks her out. Winston makes a bet with Keaton that when he and Meridan get married, he’ll sing a song of his choosing. Keaton makes a counter beat that he won’t fall in love, and Winston will give him his bike. The night they are supposed to go out, Meridan is tired from working long hours, and has to cancel. Amazingly on the same night her girl calls her, and asks her to go out celebrating at a club. There is talk about a Sam. It is shown that something went down between Nicki, Sam, and Meridan that has Meridan worried.
While they are at the club, who should they bump into but Keaton. Meridan and Keaton leave. I think they have dinner together. Over a short period of time, they get closer. By the time there’s a big basket ball game coming up Winston surprises Keaton by showing up with Meridan. Apparently she’s played in the WNBA. We already see that Keaton has fell for her, because he gets jealous. Meridan invites Keaton to go to her Daddy’s birthday party. The first time she invites him over her place, things get a little heated, but nothing happens. Nicki tells Meridan she should tell Keaton about Sam.
Keaton has a surprise of his own for Meridan. He’s also played in for the NBA. In fact he was a star player. Her dad and her cousins immediately recognize him. They almost have a second intimate encounter, but for the second time they are interrupted. The first time he doesn’t have any condoms. I forgot to mention that the women that he meet walks up on him at the gym and confronts him, because she’s already fallen for him.
But by then he only has eyes for Meridan. So the party goes well. There are a few problems. One her Aunt is kinda wild and crazy, and she hits on Keaton a little bit. Then she gets up and starts dancing on the table. Two-Jacob her childhood sweetheart is there, and he makes his intentions known for Meridan, which makes Keaton jealous. Thirdly her sister is there, whose highly critical. She and Meridan don’t get along that well.
Other than that Mr.St John makes a speech and ask his girlfriend to marry him. So all goes well. Only Jacob vows that he will get Meridan back.
When Meridan and Keaton come back he spends the night, and they make love for the first time. Soon after ward it shows Sam relised from jail. Meridan gets a phone call and Sam makes her intentions known. What they started hasn’t been forgotten. Everyone urges Meridan to tell Keaton the truth about Sam. Keaton notices a scar on Meridan while they shower. She eventually tells him a half truth that she got the scar from being physically forced and assalted. Meridan up until this point has remained a virgin. I think Keaton could tell this the first time he entered her. He deals with the news surprisingly well. Jacob calls and asks her to attend a banquet with him in Atlanta. She accepts. Of course Keaton doesn’t like it.
After a game, which I think they lost she prepares to leave. Keaton has to take her to the airport. He threatens to kill Jacob if he lays a hand on her. He hears a message he left on her message, and he also hears another one of Sam’s calls. He’s worried. Meridan does go to the banquet with Jacob and afterwards he proposes, or either he tells her he wants her back. She turns him down and he puts a passion mark on her. She packs her bags and leaves by the morning. Nicki picks her up. Keaton finds out what Jacob did, and wants to hurt him. But Meridan’s cousins (thug) deal with him in a club one night and jump him in the bathroom. It’s shown that Jacob is now snorting coke.
He shots back at the cousins, but doesn’t kill them. Someone breaks into Nicki’s home and leaves a message on her mirror. Keaton is worried about Meridan and takes her too his hometown. She meets his parents, who are shocked that he has brought a woman home to them. They see that he is finally getting serious. Up till this point he’s only revelved his feelings to one of his boys (Greg). He even throws a barbeque to introduce her to everyone. His ex shows up. Like they tend to do when you’re happy. She wants Keaton back after she sees him with Meridan, but he sets her straight and shows her the door. That night he takes Meridan to his yatch and intends to propose to her. Meridan puts him off. She’s afraid to accept his proposal because she hasn’t let him know yet that she can’t have kids. Keaton is very close to MaLeah and Fredrick and she thinks he won’t want her when he finds out. Really I think this is just an excuse, like the “fat” thing.
When Keaton is work, the next day she gets a call that Nicki has been taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. She has to leave abruptly and Keaton’s mom takes her to the airport. She confides in his mom, and tells her her fears. Her mom says that she understands and give her son the benefit of the doubt. Which is what I was thinking.
He clearly seems to worship the woman. When she gets home and goes straight to the hospital to check on Nicki, Sam shows up in the bathroom and we find out Sam is short for Samantha. She warns Meridan to get rid of Keaton. So she does. She breaks up with him because she doesn’t want Sam to hurt him.
Now any other man would have just taken this, but amazingly Keaton is a REAL man, and fights for what he wants. He comes to see Meridan and she tells him EVERYTHING. Even about the baby. Of course he understands. He leaves though because she thinks it’s best he not be involved. When he’s home something weird happens to the breaks on his car, but he survives the accident. Meridan makes peace with Jacob, who is sick and in the hospital. He also confesses to her he hadn’t been hisself.
She tells him about Sam, and he promises her that he will be her guardian angel. He apologizes and she accepts.
Keaton’s dad is running for something (mayor?). I think he wins and they have a big celebration party. Keaton is upset because Meridan won’t be there. His friend tires to hook him up with some other chick and reluctantly he takes her to the dinner. But Meridan does show up. Choas breaks out at the end of the evening with a bunch of protesters, and Keaton goes upstairs to get (his keys?). A lady that works there lets him into his room. After a while Meridan goes looking for Keaton. Why do characters always have to be so noisy and not stay put? (signing). When she gets upstairs she
Realizes that it’s a trick by Sam. Keaton and Sam tussle. Sam wants to make love to Meridan and have Keaton watch. Then she just decides to kill him. Jacob rushes in but somehow in the line of fire he and Meridan get shot. Jacob doedn’t make it.
At the hospital the doctor says that Meridan, and her baby will be fine. Keaton is shocked and so is the family. They will let him tell her. When she gets home they throw a party. Keaton and Meridan revel to everyone that they have been married for a while. What the hell? They are very vague about it. Keaton surprises Meridan with the nursery and tells her she’s pregnant. Winston calls and Keaton has to serendade her.
They have a son.
At a event in the end Nicki is there. She is talking to a attractive man, and she gets a call that Greg has been shot. Greg is her boyfriend, and the one they went to when they found out about Sam.
I give this book about a seven. I didn’t like it as much as the others before it. This one didn’t have the intensity What Goes Around, Been There Done That, and All That had. The romance in it was slightly watered down, and paid attention more to Sam and Jacob. Had to say the “Sam” thing was a surprise. I was equally surprised to find out about the ending and Meridan and Keaton’s announcement. When did this happen? It was all very vague. But I did like the characters. Darien’s books always seem to make me teary for some reason. This one was really no exception. The only parts that really frustrated me was that Meridan made such a big deal about the condition she THOUGHT she had. Like this REALLY would have turned him off to her. Do most men really care about that as intensely as she made it sound? Then the last part of the book where as always she HAD to run into the situation? Why do characters always do this? Why can’t they just stay where the are and be content, without being so noisy all the time. Ah well if you read the others might as well read this one two.
