Another nearly-perfect book, enthralling enough for a noisy plane ride yet human enough for a quiet fireside read. The protagonist is a baker at an independently-run coffee shop whose fondness for vampire stories suddenly strikes all too close to home. Yet plot descriptions don't begin to cover...

If you hunt and peck around the Internet, you'll see Robin McKinley's Sunshine described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Anita Blake. This description irks me because I couldn't disagree more. It irritates me when someone says, "Oh, hey - you like books about vampires right? Well,...

They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion-within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight. She knows that it is a vampire. She knows that she's to be his dinner, and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, when light breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day...

This is the ultimate vampire book. McKinley is such an amazing author that she sets the standard that all other books must be compared to.

I did enjoy this book in some ways, but it left me asking too many questions. Topics are brought up and then never resolved, and at moments the book drags on a little.

It's a breath of fresh air to read a vampire book that isn't about tortured souls with the appearance of a marble statue whose only goal in life, or their lack thereof, seems to be to hang around high schools and find their soul mate in a teenager. There's not too much particularly nice about these vampires and even our heroine who finds herself in an alliance with one has enough sense to be scared of these creatures. They're not handsome, most of them don't seem too remorseful for their wicked ways, and they'd sooner eat you than seduce you.

The story was fairly interesting, but there were a lot of things that I felt I really would have liked to have had more explanation on. It left me with the feeling that this book should be part of a series or at least have some sort of sequel to explain and wrap-up all these threads that are left seemingly dangling still at the end of the book. Other than that I found it to be an enjoyable read.

Great book. McKinley is a great, very precise writer. Sunshine is a good character, and Con is...strangely compelling. Read it!

This is not your typical vampire book, which is what I love about it. The vampires aren't sexy, but they're oddly fascinating. I still want a sequel.

I wanted to love this. I expected to, in fact. Alas...

I think this is one of those love it or hate type books. I didn't love it. I can't say I hated it (it did keep me reading), but I wouldn't recommend it to someone else. The story is about a young woman whose whole life is the coffeehouse that her family owns and runs. She has been raised by her mom and stepdad, and knows little about her father's family. She does know that they are magic-handlers, but not much beyond that, and her life has been uncomplicated. One trip down to the old lake house changed all of that. Sunshine struggles with the realization of what/who she is, and she forms some unlikely bonds.

From there, things should have been non-stop, but they weren't. They continued to meander along, not saying or doing much of anything. There was not enough action (of any kind), mostly just information about the different desserts she makes, or the various types of magical wards, or random page-long digressions that do nothing whatsoever for the story. Sunshine describes things in about five different ways (mostly useless similies and metaphors) before moving on to the next topic. The character development was shallow, and sooooo many questions were left unanswered. Sunshine is supposed to be a bada$$, but fails miserably by complaining all the time, or whining about wanting to die. Too many problems to have enjoyed it.

    ***Possible (if only mild) spoilers***
Why talk about her boyfriends tattoos possibly being magical, if you aren't going to address why he has them? Or go on and on about possible demon blood, if you never find out? Or the other way vampires can live so that the grown old without increased sensitivity to light, if you're not going to explain what way that is? Too much allusion, and not enough revelation.
