“Is there a diffrence between the original sunshine and the new release? ”
“I LOVED this book. It's a different take on the whole vampire genre. I also loved the cinammon rolls and all the cooking stuff. I could also appreciate Sunshine's mother, but that's probably a whole 'nother book. This is one of the best books I have read this year.”
“Couldn't help but bring this up. Has anyone heard the song Daylight by Coldplay? I personally think that if Sunshine had a theme song, this would be the one. I'm really curious what others think. Go listen to the song if you havn't..”
“Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is supposed to be set in a sort of modern-day Damar, or in a completely different universe from her other books?”
““Sunshine” by Robin McKinley 405 pages 5/5. The author creates a unique world for a story filled with danger, excitement and nail biting tension laced with much needed comic relief in all the right places. There were quite a few unpredictable twists and turns interspersed within the whole story and the characters and storyline are well developed. The main characters, Rae and Constantine, will charm and grip you and refuse to let go. This is what "Twilight" by Stephanie Meyer wants to be when it grows up. Seriously. I'm always reluctant to write reviews for fear of giving something away and spoiling the story for someone else but as with anything, when I happen on a book that surprises me, grabs me and holds me spellbound-so much that I forget to eat or sleep-I have to try to write something, if for no other reason than the book deserves it. I will do my best with the telling without telling but I will definitely not do it justice. Once I reached page 12 I could not put the book down. This is no ordinary vampire tale although it does have some of the usual elements of the genre: a young woman is in the wrong place at the wrong time, vampires and humans have a teeny tiny bit of trouble co-existing, conflict of good vs. evil and when the odds are stacked against you, go down fighting because it's no use hiding under your bed. Having said that, there are many things that make this story unique. It takes place in an alternate reality similar to our own where dark creatures or “Others” are known to exist alongside humans but are tracked by the government in order to keep humans safe. “Others” that populate this world can be angels, demons and weres of various kinds (ever hear of a were-chicken?), half-bloods and vampires. Vampires being the tricksters they are don't cooperate and register with the Agency but then we all would kind of expect that of them, wouldn't we? Since the world has run amok and the number of vamps far exceeds that of humans, the humans have learned to use unique living charms and wards for protection as well as eating dreamy desserts baked by our young protagonist, Rae, and served at her family diner. It all sounds simple enough but there are surprises in every shadow and in every ray of light. What Rae endures is unimaginable and as the nightmare unfolded as I read, I could only gasp, wide-eyed and keep turning the pages well into the night. Definitely worth the time but be forewarned-it will leave you craving more.“But my darling, what if there were no one who could do the difficult things?” As always, if you read the book, let me know what you think.”
“Does anyone know if her next book (Chalice) is the sequel to Sunshine?”
“I hope there will be another book in the series to come out.”
“My friend lent me this book, and I liked it for a while. Vampires and baking... I liked the coffee shop, and I was intrigued by the woman's first encounter with the vampire, Constantine. But the author seems to care so little for the relationships between the people that it bothered me. We hear over and over how tempestuous the relationship between Sunshine and her mom is, but I don't think we ever see them talk in scene, let alone argue. Then there is the whole business of dating a cook and lusting after a vampire, which she does not seem to feel conflicted about or even really to notice. And... and...And then there's the business of what the rules are to this world of hers. She sets some up, but then she keeps making up new ones all the way through, so people are always saying things like, "I've never heard of that kind of magic!" even as it's happening. So it seems like pretty much anything is possible. And there are no surprises at the end.”
“Sunshine's worldI am just finishing this book, which I enjoyed very much. I have gone from confusion, to admiring the way McKinley created a world for this book, and back to confusion. At the end there is still too much I don't understand. Two questions:1) Do others think she did a good job creating this fictional world?2) Does this author use this or a similar setting in other works that you know of?”
“Gilhaus - Bo's master killed Constantine's master. so Constantine killed Bo's master. So Bo was going to kill Constantine but just wanted to have some fun and torture him first. Sunshine needed to kill Bo because Bo would have killed her. Like Con said Bo would have realized that there was something special about Sunshine (i.e. her powers) when he found Bo of them gone from that house. ”
