Didn’t Like It“Did not like this version of Beauty and the Beast. All the bad parts of Beauty without the good ones. Slow, descriptive start, hurried middle, and rushed ending. The characters were cardboard, the story uninteresting, this time around. I don't know why she wanted to rewrite this story; it wasn't...” see full review » see other reviews » |

When Beauty is compelled to seek out and live at the Beast's mansion, she views her duty as helping the rose garden thrive, yet little does she realize that that is the way the beast will escape the magic inflicted upon him and return to his human form. Although McKinley's tale gets wordy at times, she weaves a tale full of charm and substance”

Yes | No“I hate to compare this book to Beauty but since Robin McKinley wrote two retellings of Beauty & the Beast – it is inevitable. If you only want to read one of the two then I would recommend Beauty. Beauty is a great retelling of Beauty & the Beast. Rose Daughter is very different and has an unconventionally ending. However, if you love McKinley’s books then I would recommend it.
This version is full of roses – literally. Taking care of roses, rose smells, rose décor, basically roses everywhere. It was little too much for me. I found myself getting bored and rushing through the long flowery descriptions.
I loved the dialogue between Beauty and Beast and how the relationship developed. Also - it was nice that a chunk of the book was devoted to the sisters’ relationships and not just the Beast plotline. ”
“This version of beauty and the beast was much better than McKinley's original version some 20 years earlier, but it still lacked excitement. However, the dialogue between the two main characters was quite intriguing and full of suspense/emotion...but then the story would move on towards something else uninteresting. ”
