Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast

by Robin Mckinley

This much-loved retelling of the classic French tale Beauty and the Beast elicits the familiar magical charm, but is more believable and complex than the traditional story. No real surprises. It was a little different from the Disney movie with no talking candlesticks. Just a nice little retelling of the well known story.

I was looking for a little bit more from this book...I was sorely disappointed. The storyline flowed well and I finished it quickly. I just wished the author would have deviated a bit to add more adventure to the already traditional story.

I really liked McKinley's "Spindle's End", too. She does an interesting job retelling the tales. Donna Jo Napoli is also a really excellent fairy-tale-reteller. (I'd recommend Zel -- I loved it.)

I've got to admit that this was one of the best retelling stories i've ever come acroos. but don't depend on my review because "Beauty and the beast" happens to be my favorite fantasy fairy tale. McKinley has given the story a more emotional-sensual touch. You may find the introduction a tad dragging and dull, but don't worry McKinley makes up to it in the later chapters ;).
