Liked It“I thought this book was intriguing. I didn't really connect with any of the characters in particular, but I found the imagery and language to be rich. Didn’t Like It“Forgetable. I thought I would like this novel as it combines two of my passions, art and medicine, in a WWI setting. Oh well. I found it obvious and forced. The well researched allusions to the history of plastic surgery and anesthesia were too many and too academic, and the excessive number...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Not a favorite but a good read. Very interesting history about surgical procedures, skin grafts, etc. woven into the story. Other than that, the main love story seemed a little over dramatic and never really came to a conclusion (maybe intentionally). ”

What an interesting setting for a book- and I didn't know that the "mask making" that is the focus of the book was historically accurate. Supposedly some of the characters are based on real people, and I was able to do some investigating. I found an intriguing website that showed some of the tin masks and some of the actual veterans who wore them. It's a heartbreaking premise for a book, but it provides a rich backdrop to the story. I enjoyed it! ”
