I am wondering, if the author wrote this for children why did it make me feel that everything that happened with the girl in the book was written as if she was adult already.....
had a hard time to read this, and I am an adult, wonder what children think of it. That must be the main problem....

This book didn't seem to stand out, make its own voice.... Lucky lives with her stepmom and her dog (real mom died) in the middle of nowhere and has to find her friend (ran away) before a storm hits.

Newberry winner, good story about a girl and her guardian. Some themes are too mature for it's intended audience, may be alright for a really mature kid with open-minded parents.

A book about a young girl named Lucky who lives in the tiny, dusty town of Hard Pan, CA. Her mother died of electrocution after a storm two years before the story began and she lives with her absent father's ex-wife, Brigitte. Afraid that Brigitte will leave her alone and return to France, Lucky decides to run away and seek her higher power, which can only be found at rock bottom. Ultimately though, things are better than Lucky expected, for both herself and Hard Pan.

This story about a girl who is having a hard time is inspirational and fun. She lost her mother at a young age and is now worried she will lose her step-mother too. But does she really want this woman to stay? The story follows her flight from home and her realization of who she is and growing up.

In my ideal classroom, I intend on having my students select their books to do book reports on. I hope that by giving the students the choice, I will make reading more appealing to them. This is quality literature as it is entertaining, but also teaches students values. It forces them to think critically and consider which path they would take.
