    • Lucky, age ten, can't wait another day. The meanness gland in her heart and the crevices full of questions in her brain make running away from Hard Pan, California (population 43), the rock-bottom only choice she has. It's all Brigitte's fault -- for wanting to go back to France. Guardians are supposed to stay put and look after girls in their care! Instead Lucky is sure that she'll be abandoned to some orphanage in Los Angeles where her beloved dog, HMS Beagle, won't be allowed. She'll have to lose her friends Miles, who lives on cookies, and Lincoln, future U.S. president (maybe) and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers. Just as bad, she'll have to give up eavesdropping on twelve-step anonymous programs where the interesting talk is all about Higher Powers. Lucky needs her own -- and quick. But she hadn't planned on a dust storm. Or needing to lug the world's heaviest survival-kit backpack into the desert.

  3. Diana Saenz

Diana Saenz edited the summary of The Higher Power of Lucky Saturday, August 29 2009.

    • Lucky lives in Hard Pan, a small desert town, with her foster mother Brigitte. Lucky's mother died suddenly when she stepped on an electrical wire and Brigitte came from France to take care of Lucky. Brigitte was Lucky's father's first wife and he called her to ask if she would come to take care of Lucky.

Lucky spends her free time eavesdropping on the adult groups who are trying to overcome addictions. She overhears them talking about how they hit "rock bottom" and then they found their "higher power", so she gets the idea that she also needs to find her higher power. Lucky is also worried that her foster mother will go back to France and leave her like everyone else in her life has. She thinks that finding her higher power might make Brigitte want to stay.

She decides to run away and discovers that she should deal with her mother's death. This book deserved the Newberry Medal that it received and I would love to read more books written by Susan Patron
