Shelfari edited the description of Tundra (Our World) Sunday, August 2 2009.

    • This entry in the new Our World series combines simple sentences with attractive photographs. In large type, the book introduces the subject with a brief description of the tundra, a land of two seasons (seasons being one of the boldfaced words found in the short glossary). At times the sun does not shine at all, and the land is always partially frozen so that the snow puddles instead of going into the ground. There is much focus on the flora and fauna, but sometimes the brevity of the text leads to questions. For instance, the statement When it becomes winter, many animals leave will make kids wonder where they go. Unfortunately, there’s no bibliography to guide further reading. The best part of the book is the full-color photography of the tundra in winter and summer, showcasing the land and the animals living there. Suggest this as a supplement to biomes units alongside other resources, perhaps including the Web sites listed at book’s end. For more on this distinctive habitat’s wildlife, look to Deborah Hodge’s Polar Animals, reviewed above. Grades 1-2. --Ilene Cooper
