This was the first ever book I read in English - and I was hooked from the moment the central character is preparing for lunch and takes his sandwiches out of the fridge where the dead cats and dogs are kept. Waugh opened a new world for me with his satirical take on a vast range of subjects -...

A great story that was made into one of the funniest movies of all time. I loved this storyline and it's impact on the funeral industry and the high cost of dying in America. Billy Graham actually succeeded in having the movie banned in 19 states due to its cynical/satirical take on death as he considered it blasphemous...

'The Loved One' centers around death, Hollywood, and the superficial desires that overtake the characters and lead to their downfall. It's a rather enjoyable book! I recommend you have a dictionary present while reading it.

One of those books assigned in a high school class, but this one had an effect on me. The satire was appealing and may have started a lifetime addiction.

At first, i thought that this book was odd and poorly written. But dont let the beginning fool you. As i continued to read, i discovered that it was funny and very entertaining. I enjoyed reading it and would suggest it to anybody.

Excluding the first chapter, this book is a great read. It's full of creepy romance that I found entertaining. At some points I had trouble remembering that it's not just about the funeral industry, but about Hollywood facade, too. The Loved One is a book that we could all learn from, and I'm proud to say that I did.

Grotesquely humorous, and excruciatingly sarcastic, this was a really, really fun read. There were bits in there that I couldn't help but laugh at, even though I really shouldn't have.

The first chapter just about killed me with it's utter badness that seemed to have nothing to do with the actual story - it's a chapter that you won't get until you go back and re-examine it after you've read the story.

Regardless of the terrible opening, this is a morbidly cute read, and goes by very, very quickly.

I thought this was a good book. I especially like the irony used throughout the book. I thought the correlation between suicide at the beginning and at the end was perfect. I loved the fact that Aimee was only certain of herself at her time of death. The fact that she worked as a mortician and ultimately ended up killing herself ON Mr. Joyboy's workroom table was awesome.

This book attempts to portray a satire of Hollywood through the bizarre situations of "Whispering Glades," a very elegant mortuary where Dennis Barlow, the main character, first catches sight of Aimee. The characters seem flawed, and Dennis, seemed to be unchanged throughout the whole story. The satirically tragic story ends with Aimee's death, but Dennis' attitude was more nonchalant than mournful. There are some quotes of irony that are noticeably funny, but in general, the book was neither tragic enough nor funny enough. Judging by the book's themr, it was very origional; however, it needs to stick to a specific tone, not sway back and forth between two polar opposites.

I wish goth kids were reading this instead of Twilite. Although it can't rival the humor that is vampires 'shining like diamonds'.
