This was a beautiful story of two young girls, cousins, forced to live with one another under less than ideal circumstances. Ashley is an orphan taken in by her aunt and uncle with a bad attitude. Nina is a spoiled, but good at heart girl who excels in school. The two cousins have nothing in...

Very interesting short story -- very important lessons on intent and on finding one's own way through this world. As well as lessons on treating others as you would want to be treated, and finding worth in yourself so that you can find worth in others.

Nina and Ashley are cousins and they don’t get along well. Ash lost her mother three years ago and her father didn’t want to take care of her, so she has been living with Nina’s family. Nina has been having dreams – nightmares, really – and she blames them on Ash, who Nina thinks is a witch.

I thought the book was o.k. I didn’t like it as much as the other de Lint books I’ve read, though. I did like the 80’s music references. Of course, the book was written in 1990, so at the time it was written, those references may have been more recognizable (or to those of us who grew up in the 80s).

Cpauley929 4 out of 5 stars This was a beautiful story of two young girls, cousins, forced to live with one another under less than ideal circumstances. Ashley is an orphan taken in by her aunt and uncle with a bad attitude. Nina is a spoiled, but good at heart girl who excels in school. The two cousins have nothing in common, but through a magical connection they are forced to reconcile their differences and accept each other for who they are. The trick is accepting themselves first.

Nina finds her self the center of attention for a malevolent spirit from the spirit world, and it turns out Ashley is the only one who can help her.

This is a wonderful story of overcoming one's past, and living in the present, of dealing with adversity and coming out a better person. I really enjoyed it. There were some glaring editing mistakes that bothered me, but ultimately didn't detract from the story.

I've read this book a few times and i always find it very interesting: it's realistic science fiction. The characters are developed in such a way that it doesn't seem ridiculous when the fiction kicks in -- it's not just written to bring around a cool idea, it's written as a story with depth and character development and emotion. The story flows very well and the characters grow and you can get very involved in the plot because it's so well written (i've read many of Charles de Lint's other books and found them just as good). De Lint has a rare talent of writing science-fiction that reads more like non-fiction or realistic fiction.

I'm really liking de Lint. This is my second one, the first being The Blue Girl. I liked The Blue Girl better, but this one was still very good. I'd recommend it. My library has one more de Lint that I'll get the next time it's available.
