  • Kern Kindregan: A werewolf, or shapechanger, who has been an outcast all of his life.
  • Ainsy (Morain): A strong willed woman who runs an inn with her uncle Tomtin. She is honest and stern and, before meeting Kern, uninterested in romance.
  • Wat: A big strong man with the mental capacity of a juvenile. He is big hearted, kind, and gentle with the animals that he is responsible for at the inn. He was adopted by Tomtin and Emma when his parents abandoned him at age twelve.
  • Tomtim Tennen: Ainsy's uncle and owner of the inn they work at and live in. He travels a lot in his wagon trading goods but is getting too old for that now.
  • Tuiloch: An evil mage Harper. He is very manipulative and lives for the hunt.
  • Stram: Wat's loyal dog.
  • Tolly: A sixteen year old boy living and working at the inn.
  • Fion: A strong, attractive, good natured woman who only pretends to be promiscuous.
  • Emma: Tomtim's deceased wife. She could not turn anyone away that was in need.
  • Tera: A woman who Kern had once been romantically involved with. But she had rejected him when she discovered he was a werewolf.
