“This is a book of horror. If we're judging it based on how much it horrified me, then this gets 5 stars. Well done. If we're judging it based on how much I enjoyed it, 2 stars.
At first I really enjoyed it. A group of paranormal investigators are sent to the legendary Hell House to investigate the possibility of life after death, paid for by the dying millionaire Rolf Rudolf Deutsch. Dr Lionel Barrett is convinced life after death is explained through physical means - and is building a machine to prove it. He is accompanied by his wife, Edith, who trusts her husband but is afraid of what she sees. His co-investigators are Florence Tanner, a spiritual medium, and Benjamin Fischer, a medium - and the only survivor of a previous investigation.
The manifestations start small, and spooky, but as they built I liked it less and less, as it became less typical horror and more sexual horror, culminating in a woman's rape. I was uncomfortable and although I understand that's the point of horror, I'm still not interested in reading it. There's plenty of horror novels out there that don't use rape to make their point.”
