What a spooky book. Now this is what all spooky books and movies should aspire to be. I love Richard Matheson's writing style.

This is one of the most disturbing books I have read. Hollywood has based a few movies around this novel, but they are G rated compared to the depravity in these pages.

Awesome, blood-spattered, sex-crazed killer ghost story. It's so great they had to get Roddy McDowell to star in the movie!

Frantic pace; once I got about 50 pages in I couldn't put it down.

A great idea for a rainy day. I finished it in two and I read slow.

A terrific read in both senses of the word. Anyone who loves horror, haunted houses, ghosts, and mindless torture of the living should read this book. A total of 301 pages, and nothing but a thrill ride through the nature of a perpetually haunted house.

Albeit, a good portion of the book was a bit pornographic for my fine tastes, it's still an excellent read. I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone under the age of sixteen - or to anyone with "sensitive sensibilities."

I was a fan of Richard Matheson's scripts for "The Twilight Zone" long before I knew he was an author. His novel "I Am Legend" is outstanding, much better than any of the three film adaptations, and I had high hopes for this novel, which was also given a motion picture adaptation. "Hell House" is a fun haunted house story with suitably creepy moments and some very '70s eroticism but I was a bit disappointed by the conclusion. My previous experience with Matheson showed me he is not afraid to take a chance but the ending to "Hell House" seemed too Hollywood and out of character for him. I'll have to hunt down some more of Richard Matheson's novels to see if his handling of "Hell House" was typical or just a slight stumble.

    Hmmmm... 3.0 to 3.5 stars

The story kept me interested, but wasn't really that scary. It is about a haunted house where much debauchery and sexual disfunction occurred even cannibalism. A man hired three people to investigate the house to see if life after death is possible. A scientist, a medium and another medium that was the only survivor of a 1940s expedition to the same house.

The scientist brought his wife along for the investigation and many weird and supernatural experiences happened, but I found the story to be a little dull. I did read it within 2 days, so it was a page turner, but that is only because I kept thinking something more substantial was bound to happen. The ending was weak and I didn't think it was scary at all. There are some sexual aspects to the novel that some might find offensive. I thought it was just absurd. Personally, I have found some of Bentley Little's books more enticing. However, they usually involved some weird sexual stories as well.

It's a quick read and a no brainer. It's entertaining as long as you take the book as pure entertainment and not as something that could possibly happen. It was OKAY... not bad, just a little disappointing in that I was anticipating more horror than was delivered.

On one hand I liked the fact that it was interesting enough to keep me reading. It was unpredictable and had some scary parts, but on the other hand the ending was really corny I thought. It had potential to be a lot scarier than it actually was.

This is my all time favorite haunted house book. I absolutely loved it. I think the ending could have been grander but the entire book as a whole was fantastic. I am a big fan of Matheson, the more I read the more I love.
