• Rafe Sullivan: Police chief of the town of Hastings. He has a great deal of patience and intelligence.
• Hollis Templeton: One of the FBI Special Crimes Unit investigators involved in trying to catch the serial killer. This is the second book in which we meet Hollis. She is Isabel's partner in this case.
• Isabel Adams: Special Agent from the FBI's Special Crimes Unit who changes and learns much as the story progresses. Great description of someone who is a very independent person. Her partner is Hollis.
• Jamie Brower: wealthy, well-known real estate broker in the town of Hastings. She is the first victim of the serial killer and the reason the FBI Special Crimes unit becomes involved in the case
