Didn’t Like It

Hey it's okay but it is one of the least relevant of Mr Hesse's works, for me. I know it is largely a translation problem but it can be a dense read, for somewhat sparse gain. Having said that, one can still always get something out of it.

All in all, I was actually a little disappointed. I feel like the story started out very well, and the ideas were great and the language with which they were expressed were excellent. While the ideas remained the same, I would have liked to see the story take a different direction, though I'm not sure which direction, exactly. I mostly feel like the first and second halves of the book were very disjointed.

This is a story about growing from boy to man in Germany just before World War I. Told from the voice of Emil Sinclair, the story details how individuals like his schoolmate Max Demian and other "masters" or gurus directed him toward the meaning of life and inner peace. Hesse's work is remarkably in tune with the spirituality of Eckhart Tolle, an author I just finished reading before I picked this up. Amazing how completely different pieces weave together serendipitously.
