the novel begins with Lucanus as a child in Antioch. Even at this time of his life his physician menter sees something special in Luke. But Luke, after the death of his childhood friend, Rubia, finds himself running away from his destiny. He does not realize the gifts he has been given. He goes through many adventures including treating the sick on a plague ship. He eventually comes to the Holy Land where he learns about the life and death of Jesus from his mother, Mary. He eventually comes to terms with life and its meaning.
