I really think that this title is among the best in the series in terms of plot twists and complexity. One of the other things that I enjoy about this series is that each title stands on its own. It's also fascinating to learn about the roles and expectations for women of various classes in post world war I Britain. Highly recommended.

The character of Inspector Rutledge is the best thing about Watchers of Time. Rutledge struggles to discover who killed a well-loved priest in a Norfolk seaside town and at the same time fight his personal demons from World War I. These demons come in the shape Corporal Hamish, who Rutledge shot for refusing an order. The Inspector has no peace as he hears, in his head, Hamish’s voice questioning his motives and decisions.

The plot leaves something to be desired because Rutledge does not put the clues together until the very end. For most of the book, he seems to flounder about trying to understand the dead man. Only near the end, does he discover the photograph that leads several people to give him some vital information.

Despite the plot, Inspector Rutledge makes the book a good read.
