This omnibus is a great introduction to Burroughs. It has selections from throughout his life and tries to overlay a framework for readers trying to understand this enigmatic author and his methods. It lends itself to the "flip and scan" method of reading, which I think is the best testament to Burroughs a collection could have.

William S. Burroughs was the fellow who famously said, “Language is a virus.” An interesting idea, and one that made me want to learn more about him. Actually, the full quote is “Language is a virus from outer space,” which is not quite as profound, but as hooks go, is a pretty good one.

So I bought Word Virus, and the first thing you should know about the book is that nowhere in the 500 plus pages do they get to the piece where Burroughs said this. If you’ve bought the book and...
