I was disappointed by this Poirot novel at first; both Hastings and Japp are back in full force, still thinking Poirot has gotten senile at last. But even though the second time through I remembered the culprit from the start, the mechanics of the crime are quite ingenious, and the letter from the killer that closes the novel had me chuckling. All in all, a strong outing for Poirot.

Jane Wilkinson, famous actress, tells Poirot of her desire to "get rid of" her estranged husband, Lord Edgware, and marry the Duke of Merton. Days later, a woman resembling her calls at Lord Edgware's house, announces herself as 'Lady Edgware' and goes into the library to meet him. Next morning, he is found dead there, having been stabbed at the base of the skull. At the time in question, however, Jane Wilkinson was miles away dining with friends at Sir Montagu Corner's house. So who killed Lord Edgware? Poirot investigates... Marvellous. Superbly constructed plot. The sense of excitement and suspense is maintained throughout. Lively characters, rapid pace of events, and surprises at every step keep the interest going. Brisk tempo. One of Christie's best
