A mix of the supernatural and the crime genres, with one story having a mystical theme. Christie seems out of her depth with the occult theme, as in the title story, where her grasp of the subject appears superficial. Similarly, 'The Call of Wings', a story with a mystical-spiritual theme, falls short of expectations. By contrast, the crime stories ('The Witness for the Prosecution' is a good example) are handled with customary finesse. The best of the lot, 'The Strange Case of Sir Arthur Carmichael', combines the occult and crime themes with dramatic results (but why was the entire story in italics?). A collection of varying quality, from the good to the indifferent, but which hangs together on the whole
