• Michael Bennett: Michael Bennett is a detective in the city of New york, he is very experienced and well trained in his field. He has 7 kids and a lady who looks after everone.
• Michael Sean Aloysius Bennett: An NYC detective with a witty sense of humor. He is described as a clever, caring and attractive middle-aged man. His wife died two years ago, leaving him with full responsibility of their ten adopted children.
• Emily Parker: An experienced, intelligent and attractive FBI special agent. She's been in charge of the FBI northeast regional CARD, or Child Abduction Rapid Deployment, team for the past two years, and was assigned on Michael Bennett's kidnapping case.
• Mary Catherine Flynn: A generous and dedicated twenty-nine-year-old woman with strawberry-blonde hair. She was hired by Michael as a nanny.
• Francis X. Mooney: A well-dressed, educated, brilliant man in his fifties who used to be an antiwar activist. He starts kidnapping rich kids and killing them if they do not answer correctly to a political test. He is described as unstable, idealist, methodical, and very careful criminal.
• Thomas Cole: Emily's brother. He's taking care of her daughter, Olivia, while she's in New York.
• Carol Fleming: Michael's boss. He's been rotated out of the Manhattan North Homicide to the Major Case squad under her command.
• Georgina Hottinger: NYC's deputy major. She is described as a rather annoying woman in her fifties, with a salon-perfected blond bob.
• Seamus Bennett: The local pastor and grandfather of Michael Bennett.
• Jacob Dunning: An eighteen-year-old student at NYU who dreams of becoming a doctor.
• Mrs. Price: A middle-aged woman with a lilting Carribbean accent who gives Michael Bennett a helpful tip during the investigation.
• Big Ice: The loud gangster who's running Energ-G Boutique, a hip-hop style clothes store located in a dangerous neighborhood.
• Chelsea Skinner: The seventeen-year-old daughter of the president of the New York Stock Exchange.
• Dan Hastings: A rich, handsome blond freshman from Columbia University. He uses an expensive computer-balanced wheelchair, as his legs have become paralyzed in a mountain-biking accident. A reckless, optimistic, self-described conservative, he tells himself he's ''embedded deep into the enemy territory at liberal Columbia.''
• Mary Beth Haas: A gorgeous grade-A student at the exclusive all-girls Brearley school, who is captain of both lacrosse and volleyball team. She actually insisted on leading a productive, and more ordinary life than her wealthy mother's, and was planning on running a children's theater in a poor section of Costa Rica during the summer break.
