Cast of Characters/Important People
- Felicity: Felicity is a sweet, shy girl who is just beginning her college career and hoping that it will give her opportunity to mature into a confident young woman. I love that she is relatable and real.
- Cain: Cain is an elder vampire with a desire to follow faith and conscience, to change the vampire world. He sees himself as a teacher, a mentor and a bringer of hope - what he did not expect to see was himself falling in love with a young human girl... Cain is mature, strong, sensitive, and everything I would want in a fantasy-man - including the fact that he is not unrealistically infallible.
- Sindy: Sindy is a vampiress of cunning wiles and extravagant attitude. The vixen takes what she wants, expecting women to stay out of her way, and men to fall at her feet. I loved to hate her, but even more surprisingly, I also grew to love her.
- Ben: Ben is a good friend to Felicity - even when that needs to include being the grounding voice of reason. He's got vampire troubles of his own - namely an ex girlfriend gone 'vamp' with an attitude. He's always there for Felicity when she needs him, and I think he wishes she needed him more.
- Allie: Alyson has been best friends with Ben since childhood, and now she extends that friendship to Felicity. Allie is a loyal friend who tells it like it is, unapologetic, sassy, fun and free. She's tiny but tough and knows more about vampires than she's probably got a right too...
- Arif: Mysterious coven leader from afar, Arif displays vampiric powers that are disquieting and manipulative. He seems to show respect for Cain, who is his elder, but even his coven of vampires and his stable-harem of humans know that he's not to be trusted.

“Some unfathomable change in his presence made her suddenly realize how tempting this position must be for him. She could feel every point at which he touched her body with heightened clarity. Felicity froze as Cain gently swept aside her hair to expose the right side of her throat and edged over the collar of her shirt. He then let his fingers trail down her shoulder and she suddenly became painfully aware of how helpless she was before him. She became almost unable to breathe as his words whispered over the back of her neck, just barely still loud enough for Ben to hear. “Pain is a small sacrifice to make... if it gets you what you need.” She felt him nuzzle her and give her a small, deliberate kiss on the throat. She closed her eyes as it caused her heart to flutter and an involuntary shiver to run through her.”

““You’re rather determined not to distance yourself from me, aren’t you?” He still had that quiet air of melancholy and she wondered how she should respond. She continued to gaze into his eyes and gave a little shrug. “Little fool. How can I resist you, if your eyes pursue me with such longing?””
Cain to Felicity in Chapter 17 -
““This is an inopportune time. As you can see, I am escorting my lady home,” Cain told him. The man eyed her as if appraising her value. “I do see the lady. And I must remark that she is not ‘yours’.” Felicity felt herself grow cold. Cain had made the words ‘my lady’ sound like a title of respect, but obviously this man understood it differently. “I claim her.” Cain said with an even, steady voice. Normally she would have been offended by the exchange, but all she could think, was ‘Bless him’.”

“Cain let out a sigh of mixed relief and annoyance. “I came in here to be alone Alyson, so if you don’t mind...” “Sorry, not gonna happen,” she replied. “And pray tell, why not?” he asked imposingly. Alyson laughed, undaunted. “Cain, this is the twenty-first century. Nobody says ‘pray tell’. You should at least try to blend,” she scolded him.”

“Alyson gestured towards the vampire Arif, unaware of them in the back of the bar. “If you want, I could send him over a drink from you. I bet that’d freak him out.” Cain raised an eyebrow at her. “Were you volunteering as the drink?””

“Arif smirked at his misunderstanding. “I drink, I do not kill. It is a pointless risk. And why deplete the herd?” At this, Cain was outraged. “It’s not ‘game management’! It’s an aesthetic choice!””

Cain surveyed the few patrons of the bar with a practiced eye. They were much as he had expected; mostly kids, barely of age. They were probably taking summer classes at the local college. There would surely be more come September. A few older men who looked to be regulars were sitting at the bar, engaged in easy conversation with the bartender. No one was particularly worth his notice; not a killer among them.
