Seventeen year old Veronica "Ronnie" Miller's life was turned upside-down when her parents divorced and her father moved from New York City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Three years later, she remains angry and alientated from her parents, especially her father...until her mother decides it would be in everyone's best a interest if she spent the summer in Wilmington with him. Ronnie's father, a former concert pianist and teacher, is living a quiet life in the beach town, immersed in creating a work of art that will become the centerpiece of a local church. The tale that unfolds is an unforgettable story of love on many levels--first love, love between parents and children -- that demonstrates, as only a Nicholas Sparks novel can, the many ways that love can break our hearts...and heal them. Sparks 14th novel and 2nd book with teenage heroine.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Friendship: One theme in this book is that with the right friends and a short period of time you can be a whole different person
  • Love: Love is something that can conquer any problem, if it is an absolutely unequivocal love. It can change you for the better or for the worst, depending on how you use and deal with it.
  • Forgiveness: Not forgiving someone tends to hurt you more than it hurts them. Forgiveness is very freeing. Forgiveness does not mean what the other person did was okay--just that the incident is not harbored in your heart and held against them.
  • Make the most of the time you have: Our days are numbered but we don't know what number they are--so don't count on having tomorrow, but instead, treat every day like it might be the last time you see the person--and make the most of it.
