I have a total girl-crush on Miranda July (which means that I want to be her, mostly). This book was sold in two colors: yellow and pink. I'm glad I got the yellow one. July constructs some really interesting characters in really interesting situations, many of them totally unbelievable in their awkwardness... But then something makes us see that we're like them. For some reason this bit is my favorite: "That is my problem with life, I rush through it, like I'm being chased. Even things whose whole point is slowness, like drinking relaxing tea. When I drink relaxing tea, I suck it down as if I'm in a contest for who can drink relaxing tea the quickest. Or if I'm in a hot tub with some other people and we're all looking up at the stars, I'll be the first to say, It's so beautiful here. The sooner you say, It's so beautiful here, the quicker you can say, Wow, I'm getting overheated."

Can't decide whether to finish this. Love some stories. Others, not so much. But the characters are good.

Miranda July is another national treasure. She wrote screenplay for indie film, "You, Me & Everyone We Know", which I thought was compelling. This book is full of short stories that are diverse, wacky & super-innovative. Check it out.

I have mixed feeling about this collection. I really enjoy alot of Miranda July's work, especially Learning to Love You More the collaboration with Harrell Fletcher. And of course her film. However i felt this collection was a slight let down. Alot of the themes are the same, and i didn't feel like she really established her characters that well. Though i did think it was well written, she knows how a good short story works.

    - The Shared Patio.
    - The Swim Team.
    - The boy from Lam Kien. ¿Pedofilia?
    - The Sister.
    - Something that needs Nothing.

I enjoyed the collection, but found it uneven. Some of the stories were really good ("The Shared Patio," "Birthmark"), and then some were just okay. Sometimes I felt the writing was super self-conscious, sometimes I loved the voice, sometimes I loved the characters...but mostly it was just okay.

This book is a beautiful creation. The stories have a similar voice, but the voice of Miranda July is so sweet, provocative, inventive, tasty, tangy, and wet....that you fall more deeply in love with her with every page. This is a good read of short stories!
