For literature considered a classic, it sure reads a lot like a seamy paperback romance in parts. However, I have to give Burroughs credit for a unique story engagingly told, regardless of its unnecessary frustrations. The ending--ughh--entirely unappealing yet not unexpected. I hope for more, but I'm glad I read it.

Even though the Tarzan stories are over 60 years old they remain timeless. These books are fantastic reading. These books make all the movies and cartoons seem meaningless. Here is how it all began for the Lord Of The Jungle. Highly recommended

This was a fun page-turner. I could tell it was released in serial form, because each chapter had its little cliffhanger. This first book ends in a way that you will want to read the next book in the series.

If you can read only one book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this must be it.

Good adventure book. Lots of fighting and admiring the primal strength that is Tarzan. Sweet love story included, and trying to unravel the history of Tarzan's lineage. Cliffhanger ending. There are many books in this series, and I will have to think about whether I want to read the rest. I'm sure they are all of the same vein.

This Tarzan is darker than the movie versions. But Johnnie Weissmuller is still the best. (The greatest athlete of all time) Edgar R. Burroughs started my reading with Pellucider and John Carter on Mars. Man gets woman, man looses woman, man gets woman back.

I think Burroughs is completely underrated. Friends laugh when they hear I like the Tarzan books and think the writing is really very good. I agree he puts you right there in the jungle. My sister said she thought she could actually smell the elephant dung. Me, too.
