There were no surprises in Gatlin County.
We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere.
At least, that's what I thought.
Turns out, I couldn't have been more wrong.
There was a curse.
There was a girl.
And in the end, there was a grave. ... read more

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small southern town of Gatlin has ever seen. Lena has wavy black hair with large green eyes. She wears a necklace made of pieces of junk and carries around a tattered journal. She is gossiped about, picked on, and neglected because of the fact that she is the niece of Macon Melchizedek Ravenwood (Old Man Ravenwood), the town's shut in. Lena is struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. However even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten south, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Lawson Wate, who has been counting the months until he graduates from high school and can escape Gatlin, is haunted by dreams in which he is trying to save a beautiful girl he has never met. He has brown hair and blue eyes and lives with Amma, his caretaker and housekeeper, and his depressed father who has shut himself in his study since his wife's death. When Lena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
The two also find a locket, which is known to have been given to Genevieve Katherine Duchannes (Lena's ancestor) by Ethan Carter Wate (Ethan's ancestor). Interestingly, whenever Lena and Ethan touch the piece of jewelry, they see different visions. Each of the visions involve Genevieve and Ethan.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything...
“Sixteen moons, sixteen years, Sixteen of your deepest fears, Sixteen times you dreamed my tears, Falling, falling through the years..." Sixteen moons, sixteen years, Sixteen times you dreamed my fears, Sixteen will try to Bind the spheres, Sixteen screams but just one hears...Sixteen moons, sixteen years,The Claiming Moon, the hour nears ,In these pages Darkness clears, Powers Bind what fire sears...”The Mysterious Song
“There's not one word that describes all the people in my family. Is there one word that describes everyone in yours?" "Yeah. Lunatics.”Lena and Ethan Wate
“Just let me give you a ride home. You shouldn't be out here." "No, thanks. I'll wait for the next guy who almost runs me down.”Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes
“You're so full of crap, you could pass for a toilet. You like her, Wate. Admit it.”Link Lincoln
“No, I'm too busy trying to deflect your Power of Stupidity. But I don't think I'm strong enough.”Lena Duchannes
“I loathe towns. I loathe townspeople. They have small minds and giant backsides. Which is to say, what they lack in interiors they make up in posteriors.”Macon Ravenwood
“I'm a freak, you're a freak. Your house makes rooms disappear, my house makes people disappear. Your shut-in uncle is nuts and my shut-in dad is a lunatic, so i don't know what you think makes us so different.”Ethan Wate
“Darkness, real darkness, was something more than just a lack of light.”Ethan Wate
“You watch yourself. One day you're gonna pick a hole in the sky and the universe is gonna fall right through. Then we'll all be in a fix.”Amma Treadeau
“What in the heck are those?" "Ethan Wate, you watch your mouth, or I'll have to wash it out with soap. You know better than to use profanity." Which as far as she was concerned, included words like panties, naked, and bladder.”Ethan Wate and Aunt Grace Statham
“I'm not crazy. I thought I was, but I'm not. It's you. You're standing right in front of me.”Ethan Wate to Lena Duchannes
“Mortals. I envy you. You think you can change things. Stop the universe. Undo what was done long before you came along. You are such beautiful creatures.”Macon Ravenwood
“I still can't think about her being there. It doesn't make sense. Why would you stick someone you love down in a lonely old hole in the dirt? Where it's cold, and dirty, and full of bugs? That can't be how it ends, after everything, after everything she was.”Ethan Wate
“Around here, libraries were created so that Alcoholics Anonymous would have somewhere to meet when the Baptists kicked them out.”Marian Ashcroft
“Don't think of me as a librarian. Think of me as a mad scientist; this is my secret laboratory.”Marian Ashcroft
“Jeez Dr. Ashcroft, you about scared the pants offa me!”Ethan Wate
“If I let her go, something terrible would happen to her. But that's the thing. I couldn't let go. I couldn't lose her. It was like I was in love with her, even though I didn't know her. Kind of like love before first sight.”Ethan Wate
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”Martin Luther King Jr.
“No wonder Lena didn't want to see the visions. I was starting to agree with her. There were no coincidences.”Ethan Wate
“Julia! I mean Ridley. What are you doing here? I must be confused. I thought, I thought..." I knew something was wrong. This didn't seem like your average mother-daughter hello.”Aunt Del and Ethan
“Moments bleed together, no span to time fate decides until challenged by the fated desperate/ relentless/ condemned/ empowered open your eyes;and see. illuminate the darkness illuminate the darkness”Lena
