  • Aisling (Ash): The main character. She suffers great loss with the deaths of her parents, then is forced to work as a servant for her stepmother.
  • Kaisa: The king's new Huntress.
  • Sidhean: A fairy Ash meets in the woods.
  • Lady Isobel Quinn: Aisling's step-mother. She marries Aisiling's father after the death of his first wife. Mother of Ana and Clara.
  • Ana: The eldest step-sister. Beautiful but vain. Hopes to find a rich husband, ideally Prince Aidan.
  • Clara: The younger step-sister. Ash says she's the closest one she has to an ally in the household.
  • Gwen: A servant of Lady Isobel's sister.
  • William: Ash's father.
  • Elinor: Ash's mother.
  • Beatrice: Lady Isobel's housekeeper at Quinn House. When she falls ill and doesn't return, Ash replaces her.
  • Maire Solanya: The local greenwitch. Before she married William, Elinor was apprenticed to her.
  • Prince Aidan: A tough prince who has just returned from battle. He is going to select a wife from amongst all of the eligible women in the country.
  • Colin: A servant of Lady Isobel's sister.
  • Eilis: In a story, she is the King's Huntress who retrieves the royal heir from the Fairy Queen.
  • Kathleen: Character in Ash's favourite fairy tale as a child.
  • Jonas: Carriage driver for Lady Isobel.
  • Taryn: The last King's Huntress. She left her job because her lover asked her to. Kaisa was her apprentice.
  • Peter: A butcher's son.
  • Soren: Kaisa's servant at the hunting camp.
  • Saerla: The fairy horse Sidhean gives to Ash.
  • Queen Melisande: The king's wife and mother of Prince Aidan. She is from Concordia and wishes her son to marry a woman from her homeland, but he refuses.
  • Gregory: A hunter in Kaisa's company.
  • Lore: Kaisa's apprentice. She is skeptical of Ash's intentions towards Kaisa.
  • Sara: A chambermaid at Quinn House. She is the first to be let go after William's death.
  • Maire Nicneva: The most powerful greenwitch of her time.
  • Anya: William and Elinor's housekeeper. Lady Isobel leaves her behind in Rook Hill when the family moves to Quinn House.
